Unapologetically Rae

The rebel yell inside of me is saying “I don’t want to niche down”. The downer Debbie inside of me is saying, just as loudly, “that’s fine, but then you’ll never make it, kid.”

It’s been a week since I’ve sat down to try and write another blog post. I keep putting it off because the initial excitement has worn off and now I’m being harder on myself after seeing everything everyone else is doing and talking about. You have to niche down, you have to sell things, you have to have professional photography, you have to be prettier, you have to suck all the fun out of starting a blog (no one said these things bluntly, but this is what I take from the world I’ve stepped into). Blogging is a tad overwhelming at first and I didn’t fully appreciate the layers of skills required. Sure, you need to write half decently but then you have to sell yourself and hustle. I like a good hustle, but I feel there also needs to be a balance of the hustle game and the I’m a genuine person game.

I’ve always enjoyed writing and it’s definitely a stress release to just get everything that is flying around in your head in print. It feels good, like a weight is lifted and you can move on to the next task. I don’t think anyone likes being told what to do and how to focus their creative juices. I don’t want to be told what to write, I don’t want to feel like I won’t be successful if I don’t write about x y z. If I’m feeling something then I want to express that, if I’m excited about something, I want to share that.

I’m not a cookie cutter – I’m a quirky, sarcastic, fun-loving gal who happens to be a mom of three obnoxious, adorable, perfect boys, I game (board, card, PC, console), I am a makeup lover and noob, I drive my partner crazy in both good and bad ways, I work on myself and my family to try and be healthy and I happen to get amped and passionate about several topics. I also like helping others, so if I feel like I got something right in the parenting world then why not share that tid bit and see if it works for someone else or if I can share how I made those mom bags under my eyes tone down a bit – then hey, you should know too.

I think what I’m trying to say is, I want to ride my own path and forge my own success. I want to be true to myself. I will not niche down today. That’s a good beginning process, no? To write about all the things and then perhaps one day decide that you are more passionate about one or two of those things. If makeup is on my mind and I want to make a video showcasing my goofy personality with my noob makeup skills I hope that it’s well received, because it’s me. If I want to put up a stream of a game I indulge in – then I hope I bring a new interest to the table and you can appreciate we aren’t always going to have all of the exact same interests. I hope that that’s okay too, and you’ll come back next week to see what else I’ve come up with, regardless.

I’m going to be unapologetically Rae. Sound good?

Sounds good to me! There are some blogs that operate like you’re reading someone’s every journal or diary entry. These ones really do make interesting reading especially if the owner has an interesting life which it sounds like you do! I say go for it! All the very best. I should come back to check.

Hi Rae, lovely to meet you! I’m a fellow WoW player so as soon as I saw your screenshot I had to come check out your blog and welcome you to the blogging world. Definetly don’t worry about fitting into a niche. You’ll come to find that those of us who tend to fly on the more geeky side of things are – as usual – the outsiders of the blogging world. There are some great geek blog groups on facebook and I’ve actually just started a group for small niche and nicheless bloggers which you’re welcome to come check out too. Basically what I’m trying to say is you’re not alone and you’ve got the right attitude already; be you, write what you want and do so unapologetically!
